Tips to Attend Touch-a-Truck

For some kids in Hampton Roads, the best day of the year is right around the corner.  No, it’s not their birthday, Christmas, or summer vacation — it’s Touch-a-Truck Time!  The one day a year that they have the chance to get in the driver seat of a tractor, talk to a Fireman or get their photo taken with a solider.

You see, this weekend, Saturday April 29, is the 5th Annual Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach Touch-a-Truck at the Greenbrier Mall, and it’s going to be BIG!

Every truck that your kids could imagine, from emergency vehicles, construction trucks, military vehicles and so much more!  The professionals that build, protect and serve our community will also be there with their trucks to answer questions about how the truck works, how they help our community and to take pictures.

Here at Hampton Roads Moms we want to give you some tips to ensure that you and your family have a great time at Touch-a-Truck!

Tips to Attend Touch-a-Truck

Early Entry

Touch-a-Truck does not open until 10:00 a.m. but you can get early entry by purchasing the VIP tickets. They are only selling a limited number of tickets, so be sure to purchase them in advance.

The early entry VIP tickets include coffee and doughnuts provided by Krispy Kreme, as well as a hardhat giveaway for the kids.  By arriving early, your kids will be able to see everything first and will help to avoid the lines that will accumulate later in the day.

VIP tickets are $10 a piece, or $35 for a family of four and is worth the money if you want to avoid crowds and give your kids a one-on-one experience.  And remember, this is a fundraiser so the extra money for the VIP event is actually going back into the community.  Win/Win.

Be Prepared

The event will occur rain or shine, so be sure to check the weather before you head out that morning. The weather report is calling for 87 degrees and sunny, so make sure that you have sunscreen and hats on the family. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothing to be outside, standing and climbing on trucks.

With the weather being so warm, be sure to pack bottles of water for the family or be prepared with cash to purchase some from the vendors.

Bring Cash

Although you can pay at the gate via check or credit card, having exact change will help move the lines and get you in quicker.  If you want to stay ahead of the lines, you can also purchase your tickets in advance online.

I always find cash great at local events to make the many transactions with the vendors quick and easy. Touch-a-Truck will have vendors, food trucks and some opportunities to make donations, so carrying cash on you is great for shortening transaction time and purchasing from vendors that only accept cash.

Know when to go

If you want to avoid the crowds, Hampton Roads Moms suggest going early, coming late or considering purchasing the VIP pass.

If you are a family that has special needs or with sensitive hearing, Touch-a-Truck offers a quiet hour to accommodate your family’s needs.  From 2:00 -3:00 p.m. there will be a quiet hour where there will be no horns or sirens.

Have Fun!

Touch-a-Truck offers some great activities for families.  First, there will be tons of trucks for the kids to touch, climb and explore.  Kids learn through exploration so be sure to let your kid climb and touch everything that they want and encourage them to ask all the questions they can ponder.  This will make the day not only a fun family outing, but a learning experience.

Touch-a-Truck offers a Fun Bus and face painting for the kids to enjoy.

There will also be food vendors, so be sure to checkout some of the awesome food trucks Hampton Roads has to offer!
